The similarity between the logo of Wagner and the insignia of the SS "Totenkopf" Division has long been known in Russia's far-right circles. Its name and symbols are owed to ex-commander of the 700th separate battalion of SPSN, Colonel Dmitriy Utkin. As he was an admirer of Third Reich aesthetics, in 2014 he chose a personal call sign “Wagner”, while his combat group became known as “Wagner’s Group”. Photos of Nazi tattoos on Utkin's chest are publicly available online. The first commander of SS "Totenkopf" Division was a former concentration camp "Dachau" commandant Theodore Eicke.
